Who Needs It
Anyone performing the following temporary operations involving open flames or heat during fire risk periods or while in Fire Restrictions.
- Welding, cutting, grinding or any operation producing heat or sparks
- Outdoor cooking with heat sources not fueled by propane (e.g., charcoal grills)
How to Apply
- Submit the application form at the bottom of this page.
- Submit at least 2 days prior to operation to allow for review and scheduling of inspections.
Submission Requirements
- A site map, mitigation plan (e.g., 30-ft clearance, fire watch setup), and proposed safety measures.

Key Safety & Code Standards
HOT WORK SITE MITIGATION MINIMUMS
- Adequate extinguishment equipment (i.e. 2A/20BC extinguisher, Shovels, clean dirt, supplied water)
- Adequate personnel for Fire Watch who are NOT performing hot work.
- Site cleared of vegetation where any sparks or slag may fall (min. 8-foot buffer)
- Proper usage of fireproof mats/curtains where vegetation clearing is not possible.
- Remove all other flammable or combustibles in area where sparks or slag may fall.
- Maintain Fire watch for a minimum of 30 minutes after completion of hot work.
- Notification to Grand County Dispatch at 970-725-3311 prior to work commencing.
- Ensuring that no Red Flag or Fire Weather Watch is in effect for the area.
- If necessary, coordinate with Fire District for a standby during hot work operations.
OUTDOOR COMMERCIAL COOKING MITIGATION REQUIREMENTS
- Appliance has adequate structural integrity and is maintained so as not to create a fire hazard.
- Extinguishment equipment is on site, readily available, currently inspected, and appropriate for the fuel type and load.
- The site under and around (8ft buffer) is free of combustible materials.
- Appliances are operated and under supervision of trained personnel at ALL TIMES, appliances shall not be left unattended at any point while flame or heat remain.
- Maintain a 30 minute fire watch after extinguishing of any solid fuels.
