Event Tent Permits
Who Needs It
All temporary structures—including tents, canopies, membrane structures, and awnings—over 400 sq ft require a permit.
Application & Fee
- Submit the application form at the bottom of this page.
- Submit at least 10 days prior to tent installation to allow for review and scheduling of inspections.

Submission Requirements
- A site map showing the tent location in relation to buildings, roads, fire department fixtures, and exits, plus layout of tables, chairs, heaters, cooking stations, etc

A Flame-Resistant Certificate for the tent fabric, plus a snow load rating.

Permit
You will receive your Event Tent Permit once payment is received.
Inspection
An on-site inspection by East Grand Fire must be completed prior to occupancy of any temporary structure. Contact us at (970) 726-5824 or inspections@eastgrandfire.com to schedule once your application has been accepted.
Key Safety & Code Standards
The tent must comply with a variety of codes and safety standards (IBC 2021, IFC 2021, NFPA 1, 101, 701), plus additional life safety concerns identified by the Fire Prevention Bureau:

Tent duration cannot exceed 180 days.

Minimum 20-foot clearance from generators or internal combustion engines.

No obstruction to fire department access; 20-foot clearance open around the tent from buildings, lot lines, parked vehicles, or other structures.

Flame-resistant materials mandatory for tent fabric, decor, and floor coverings. Hay, straw, and similar materials are prohibited inside.
- Support ropes and guide wires shall be considered as part of the temporary membrane structure or tent.

At least one 2A:10BC fire extinguisher, securely mounted (4–60 inches high), with conspicuous signage.

Exit paths required so occupants are within 100 ft of an exit; exit signs must be illuminated and unobstructed. The number of exits shall be in accordance with the International Fire Code, Table 3103.12.2.

No smoking signs inside/outside; no open flames, fireworks, or ignition devices permitted within the structure.

Portable heaters must not have open flames inside; propane cylinders must remain at least 10 ft away. Cylinders shall be secured in a manner to prevent movement, damage and protection from vehicles.

In winter, the setup must meet local snow load requirements or include a snow removal plan during occupancy.

Permit must be posted within the structure and is non-transferable. Any changes to occupancy or ownership require a new permit.

Additional requirements may be imposed on applicant due to the specific use and types of membrane structure as per Chapter 31 of the International Fire Code and other applicable rules and/or policies of the East Grand Fire Protection District #4.
